An Arborists Guide to choosing the Right Tree for the RIGHT Climate

June 22, 2017

When selecting a tree for a particular site, an arborist will need to consider many different factors.  First off, the arborist should obtain as much information as possible about the environment in which the tree will be planted.  He or she will need to consider the climate, elevation, exposure to sunlight, and soil quality.

The arborist needs to consider the prevalence of insect or tree disease in the area, as well as the degree of air pollution.

Perhaps the most commonly overlooked quality in tree selection is hardiness to cold, particularly when the selection occurs during the warmer months.

The United States Department of Agriculture has created a map of cold hardiness zones, which may serve as a general reference for arborists.  This map divides the country into 10 zones according to the average annual minimum temperature.  Many plant nurseries have developed lists of the appropriate trees for each zone.
